What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian Head Massage (IHM) is a holistic therapy that focuses on the head, scalp, face, neck, shoulders and upper back. It has been practised in Asia for more than 5,000 years and is now appreciated in the West using a blend of traditional Indian and Western massage techniques.
The practice of Indian Head Massage originates from Ayurveda, the ancient ‘science of life’ involving natural therapies taking account of mind, body and spirit.
Indian Head massage is recognised as a very relaxing and accessible treatment which can take a client to a peaceful state of wellbeing as well as having wider health benefits.
What are the potential benefits of Indian Head Massage?
Increased energy levels
Induces a feeling of calm and relaxation
Improved hair condition
More efficient removal of impurities and toxins from the body
Stimulation and improvement of circulatory and lymphatic systems
…….and an overall sense of wellbeing
What is an IHM treatment?
Your first session may last a little longer than the usual hour to take account of a full consultation. There will be beautiful relaxing music playing throughout your treatment unless of course you prefer silence – which is absolutely fine!
For the treatment, you will be invited to relax, seated upright in a chair as it is the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face that will be massaged. Use of oils in the hair is optional during your treatment. To get the best results, you are encouraged to wear a lightweight soft cotton top or ‘T’ shirt and loose fitting clothes generally, so you can completely relax.
Is Indian Head Massage suitable for me?
IHM is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where you should avoid Indian Head Massage such as a recent head injury. Medical assessment is part of the consultation, so please let me know about any medical conditions that you think I should be aware of, and any changes to medication you have previously highlighted you are taking.
Your IHM treatment with me will be for 1 hour and the hands-on aspect of this is 45 minutes. The remaining time is spent on a consultation beforehand and relaxation time after the treatment.
After your treatment
To gain maximum benefit from your IHM, try to rest afterwards. This helps your body’s natural healing process. Avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water for a few days afterwards as this helps to flush away toxins.
